You might have heard that eating too few calories will "slow your metabolism down."
Well, that's bullshit.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you to starve yourself for weight loss. In fact, I'd tell you the exact opposite.
The "internet fitness gurus" and I would agree that eating too few calories is a bad idea, but it's not because it slows your metabolism down and puts you into "starvation mode".
It's because it makes you lazy.
When you drop your calories too low - your body does adapt. Your energy drops, your mood drops, and you feel like shit. You may not realize what's going on at the time, but you're going to be considerably lazier than before.
When I was deep into a contest prep for a bodybuilding show, even reaching across the couch for the remote control could feel like an enormous task. So I'd sit there, watching Bubble Guppies for an extra 10 minutes.
That major decrease in activity levels is also a decrease in calories burned. You dropped your calories, and in return your body dropped your energy levels. This isn't starvation mode, but it is a reaction to eating too little.
This is called N.E.A.T. - Non-exercise activity thermogenesis. The calories you burn that aren't related to exercise. When your activity drops, NEAT drops drastically and you stop burning as many calories.
The answer is to follow a method of eating that helps you lose weight, but doesn't decrease your energy levels. Instead it helps you feel full, gives you plenty of energy, and helps you kill your workouts.
