How committed are you?
I cancelled an interview with a potential employee this morning.
We had our interview scheduled at 10am, but at 9am I got an email saying "something came up" and he wanted to "reschedule for the same time tomorrow"...
I told him thanks, but no thanks.
According to Tik-Tok, I'm the asshole. I mean - I get it, most people have never been an 'employer' before. They haven't had to do the job interviews, make judgments knowing very little about a person - and then hope that they can actually do the job that you want them to.
Especially the more entry-level type of jobs.
But to even get to that point, you have to make it to the interview... and if something comes up, you better make damn sure the employer knows what's going on.
Had this interviewee given me a reason for his wish to reschedule, rather than "something came up," I would be much more likely to give him another chance.
But making it to the interview is step 1, and if you can't do that - what's going to stop you from coming to work consistently on time? It's not a good sign, ya know?
For me, it comes down to commitment. Can you stick to your commitments?
Can you do what you say you're going to do?
And if you can't stick to the first one, like making it to a job interview, chances are bad that you're going to stick to the rest.
I think that's something that really clicked for me when I started competing in bodybuilding. At that point in time it didn't matter what the excuses were, I just had to make it happen.
Sick? Still gotta eat the same thing.
Tired? Still gotta go to the gym.
Slept in late? Still gotta get my cardio in.
That's what I think is missing from most people's plans: commitment.
So the question I have for you is: How committed are you?
Are you going to back out at the first inconvenience? Or are you going to make it work regardless of the circumstances?
That's really all that matters. The rest is just figuring out the details.
If you're not very good at sticking with your commitments - start today.
One of the easiest ways is to take a multivitamin on a daily basis. It doesn't get much easier than that - does it?
But there are plenty of people that won't make it through their first bottle - and if they can't do that... how are they going to stick with a diet or workout program?
It's a process of becoming the person that does what they say, and sticks to what they tell themselves.
It's a skill, it can be developed, and you can start today.
