Last month I took my family to Cancun.
It was our first time outside of the country, and a bit nerve-racking.
But we're newbies, so we stayed at a nice resort and enjoyed our time feeling like we were richer than we actually are.
One of my favorite things about the resort we stayed at?
The FlowRider surfing machine.
I would have spent all of my time there if I were alone, because it was that much fun. It reminded me of snowboarding, which I haven't done since I was 19.
But when learning any new skill you can expect some... problems.
Like a broken finger.
A bruised foot.
And a tweaked triceps muscle.
It's like I was a kid again - except for the injuries.
And those injuries became a major problem when I returned to my regularly scheduled workouts.
I could barely grip anything, and anytime I did a movement involving my triceps... it hurt.
So I had to modify my workouts tremendously...
And if I'm being honest - it barely feels like I'm working out in comparison. The triceps injury really limits my ability to work chest, shoulders, and triceps.
The broken finger makes any 'pulling' motion difficult as I can barely grip the bar.
(like using wrist-straps to support my grip)
Then when things are feeling better, I can swap those exercises back in and won't have lost any progress.
This is a long-term game. You have to figure out how to adapt - even if it's not perfect. Even if it makes you feel like an idiot because you barely feel like you're working out.
That ability to adapt, shift, and change with problems is what will make you successful in the long term.
So find a way to adapt. Improvise. Doing 'something' is almost always better than 'nothing'.
